Which is the best Supermarket loyalty card? Most major supermarkets offer reward schemes, these include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Iceland, Marks & Spencer, Lidl, Waitrose and Co-op.
There are many different supermarket loyalty schemes, with varying benefits. Whilst some offer cashback, others instead offer coupons and freebies. Some may appeal more than others based on location and the types of reward.
Supermarket Reward Cards
If you're looking for the best supermarket loyalty schemes available to take advantage of, have a look at each of them in more detail...
Asda Rewards
Brand new for 2022, Asda has finally joined the other supermarkets and started a customer loyalty program. Download the app, and scan it at the end of your shop. Star products earn you rewards. You will also earn cashpot rewards when you reach certain milestones. You can even earn on George, George Home & more!
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: You will need a smartphone as it's not a physical card.
Tesco Clubcard
To get the best value from shopping at Tesco, the Tesco Clubcard allows you to collect points on every item you buy, making these points build up over time. Every 150 Clubcard points are turned into £1.50 vouchers which you can use to shop and save at this supermarket and its Reward Partners.
Update: In 2021 Tesco launched 'Clubcard Prices' which means most of their deals and events, such as the recurring Tesco baby event, the Christmas toy sale event and (my favourite) 25% off wine will be for Clubcard holders only.
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: Tesco deactivates your vouchers after two years, so if you don’t use them up by this point then you’ll lose out on your rewards. Make sure you use up your vouchers before they expire, and don’t forget to use your Clubcard at the checkout to maximise your points.
Clubcard Plus
Clubcard Plus takes the regular Clubcard one step further, allowing you to get 10% off F&F and your groceries in-store twice a month.
Free to join: No. There is a one-month free trial, however, membership costs £7.99 per month after this
App available: Yes
Warnings: If you do not wish to continue with Plus after the one-month free trial, you must make sure you cancel your subscription or else you will be charged. Furthermore, this scheme may not benefit you if you do little weekly shops.
Try doing big shops as this will help you save more money.
Morrisons More
With the Morrisons More scheme, you can earn money off and instant rewards through the More App on your mobile phone & website. The MoreCard is more convenient and easier to manage than ever, and it even sends you personalised offers and benefits all in one place.
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: The points scheme ended on May 10th, 2021, but you can continue to use your Morrisons More Card to receive personalised offers based on your purchases.
Iceland Bonus Card
Enjoy benefits at Iceland with £1 back for every £20 you save on your card. You can save as little or as much as you like, making things more manageable for you – just let the cashier know how much you’d like to save, and the same goes for spending. You can also save and spend online, making it easier to manage your budget and plan ahead for big-spending events such as Christmas.
Update: In 2021 Iceland followed in Tesco's footsteps and launched 'Bonus Card Prices' which means most of their best deals will be for Bonus Card holders only and are also available in-store only.
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: Your Bonus Card will expire 2 years after the last time you use it, so if it has any remaining balance on it, then it will not be retrievable. So make sure you take advantage of your Card so you don’t lose out.
Marks & Sparks
Marks & Spencers’ loyalty scheme treats you to offers, events, and other exclusives, as well as donating to a charity each time you shop. Every time you shop, you collect more sparks. The more sparks you collect, the more benefits you’ll get. For every £1 you spend, you’ll receive 10 sparks, for every review you write, you’ll receive 25 sparks, and for every time you shwop, you’ll receive a whopping 50 sparks.
Free to join: Yes
App available: Sparks is available to join through the M&S app
Warnings: Sparks doesn’t operate in any of the M&S international stores.
MyWaitrose Scheme
With this loyalty scheme, instead of earning points, Waitrose offers its loyal customers discounts and freebies. It allows people to get a free tea or coffee in-store, and access to deals such as 20% off fish at the fish counter. On top of all this, you can access the monthly Waitrose food magazine for free!
Free to join: Yes
App available: Waitrose & Partners app available, but not specifically myWaitrose
Warnings: It may only be worth being part of this scheme if you have a Waitrose nearby and shop there regularly since a lot of the rewards like free drinks are instant and not available online.
To make the most of this scheme, you’d want to go in-store as much as possible to access your free drinks.
Lidl Plus App
Shoppers can download the Lidl Plus app and register with their details to be introduced to a range of coupons. Personalised offers will be produced later on, based on the items that the individual shopper purchases and new coupons are available every Thursday.
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: This loyalty scheme doesn’t offer a return on the money you spent in-store.
Check your app regularly so you don’t miss out on any coupons that may benefit you.
Co-op Membership
For every £1 you spend on any Co-op own-brand service or item, you get 2p back, and the same amount goes to supporting local causes and communities. You can save money through offers, as well as feeling good by helping out charities.
Free to join: £1 membership fee
App available: Yes
Warnings: 5% of your rewards from buying co-op items or services will be lost after a year if you’ve not used your membership card within this time.
An obvious tip for this one would be to make the most out of buying Co-op’s own brands instead of branded food and drinks since you can only access your rewards through this method.
Sainsbury’s Nectar
This is another great saving option. By spending money in-store, you can build up your Nectar points and then spend points in place of money. You get 1 point for every £1 you spend at Sainsbury’s. 1 Nectar point is equivalent to half a penny, which isn’t a lot, but these points can easily build up after big supermarket shops!
Free to join: Yes
App available: Yes
Warnings: One of the only ways to get more from your points was the Double Up event which has now been cancelled!
Tip: Save up your Nectar points until the Double Up event to maximise your benefits, use our sale dates calendar to find out this year's Nectar Double Up Date
