Other Ways to Save on School Uniform

There are other ways to cut the costs of purchasing school uniform aside from in-store sales.

Online Marketplaces

Preloved clothing sites such as Vinted, eBay and Facebook Marketplace often have secondhand uniforms for sale at a heavily reduced cost.

There’s also an online marketplace called  Uniformly that is specifically for school uniforms, where parents & PTAs can buy, sell, give away and recycle outgrown school uniform.

Charity Uniform Grant

The Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust are a are a trade specific charity, supporting parents and carers who work in the fashion industry.

They give grants to children of workers in a wide range of fashion and textile businesses, including high street clothing shops (NEXT, M&S, John Lewis, etc) as well as textile manufacturers, logistic companies for fashion/textiles and commercial laundries.  Find out More.

GroceryAid £150 Grant

The scheme is available to Parents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (and some in England, but it’s a postcode lottery).

You will need to apply via your local council’s website.

Charity Shops

Charity Shops and Facebook Marketplace are both great ways to get cut-price clothing.

Uniform Swaps at Your Child’s School

Most Schools do a uniform swap towards the end of the year, in which they will ask parents to bring in any good-quality, unwanted uniforms so that other parents can pick them up.

There’s also always loads of unclaimed lost property put out as well, so it’s worth checking to see if any items of your children are there that may still be of use.

If your school doesn’t participate in this, perhaps you could bring it up with the head teacher, as it’s a great way to stop perfectly good uniforms from going to landfill.

What time of Year Should you buy school uniforms?

The best time of year to purchase school uniforms is in July, during the 6 weeks of school summer holidays.

This is when Tesco, Asda & M&S offer 20 – 25% off ALL their uniform range and Aldi Launches its incredible £5 full uniform bundle.
